Travel Agents Work Hard
I had worked for an airline for many years, far too many to remember, and the area that I was in was in holiday reservations. I was on the phones with lots of various holiday destinations to choose from. We were suppose to be an authority on the far away places that the airline sold and one day we were told as part of our duties we had to go to the tropical island resorts so we could get acquainted with the product that we were selling.
How good was that! First thought was great I will pack my swimmers and then after we had a site inspection (we normally need to view properties that we sell so we are able to sell them better) we would then have free time. That was the plan though, but I didn’t know that we were to visit over 15 hotels in a space of 2 days, my head was already spinning and after about 6 hotel inspections all the hotels merged together..I had information overload. Only one more hotel to visit and then back to the hotel we were staying at. I thought to myself I would have a swim that would freshen me up but the tour guide had other plans, he said “see you in 30 minutes and I will show you the new king suite”.
I was absolutely knackered as I had to look interested and make comment on yet another bedroom. The night wore on and we had to attend a host dinner and this was really like working as you made polite conversation and raved about the hotel features etc.
That was a very tiring and exhausting familiarisation tour and we finally did get to some of the more luxurious resorts and even though the airfare was free and the accommodation was arranged free of charge but as grateful as I was for the opportunity to go away it was a lot of work and we used to have to go on a weekend in our own time. So the next time you go into a travel agent and she tells you she has been there you now know that she didn’t get any free time to loll around the pool she only really saw hotel rooms!
