Pet Friendly Switzerland

In general, pet friendly Switzerland is not merely a figment of your imagination. The Swiss are, overall, a very friendly nation to pets of all kinds. Just like in most Western nations, pets are considered a part of the family, rather than a beast of burden or a nuisance. You’ll find a wide variety of establishments that gladly accept dogs, cats, and other animals while you’re on vacation, from hotels and inns to recreational areas and attractions.

Because pet friendly Switzerland has an open and accommodating attitude toward animals, you’ll find the import requirements to be a lot more lenient than in a lot of other countries. For example, if you are bringing your pet from a country without an urban rabies problem, all you’ll need is a valid and current rabies vaccination certificate to get your pet in the country.  For countries with urban rabies problems, a special permit will be required in advance of entering Switzerland.

Be aware that pit bulls, Rottweilers, and mastiffs are considered dangerous in Geneva and not permitted there. Also, if you’re traveling in Geneva, all dogs must have muzzles in public parks.  Further, since docking of the ears and tail is not permitted in pet friendly Switzerland, you must prove you have been the animal’s owner for at least 6 months prior to entering the country, and the animal may not stay in Switzerland for longer than 3 months. Be sure your pet is leashed and collared in public at all times, and you’ll both have a wonderful time in Switzerland!

Inspired by a BAD traveling experience with my pet, I vowed I would never put my pet – or myself – through that again. After a few searches for quality “traveling with pets” information, I discovered there wasn’t much.
