Hotel Or Rental – What to Do?

When going on vacation with the family you have to consider the cost per person and the value of your accommodations.

Hotel rooms, in general, are more expensive than vacation homes/rentals.

First, there is a maximum number of people you can fit in a hotel room without sneaking around to hide the extras
Second, when sleeping in a hotel room you have to eat out 3 times a day, or, again, sneak all your food to your room and ‘picnic’ on your bed

Of course, if you are not going with a large group of people and your children aren’t really small anymore, eating out definitely provides the best opportunity for mom to rest. After all, she is on vacation too and would probably love to have a break from cooking breakfast, lunch and dinner for a few days.

Here are a few pointers to look for when you decide to vacation in a rental:

How many bedrooms
How many people does it sleep
Is there a full kitchen or just a kitchenette
Do you need to bring your own salt, pepper, spices, and herbs, etc
How far from the beach is it
Do you need to bring your own linens (bed sheets, towels, etc.)
Is there a TV, radio
Is it a regular house or is it in a resort type setting with swimming pools etc.
Ask beforehand if the rental includes any water, electricity and gas usage
Is it a rental or a family home

Usually, when it says that a rental sleeps a certain number of people; you can ad one or two to sleep on a cot or in the living room. Make sure you clarify that there is that possibility.

Each country has its own culture and habits. Make sure you read up on the specifics before you decide whether to go in a hotel or a rental.

If you go to the beach – keep in mind that the closer you are to the beach, the more expensive the rental. On the other hand, the more you enjoy the beach atmosphere!
