A Primer on Getting Very Cheap International Flights
We all like to find a good deal, saving money on any trip by getting a very cheap international flight can help you put more money on your accommodations so you will have more fun or it will allow you to do it again sooner.
I did a lot of travelling in my life, I visited tons of countries and I became an expert on getting the best possible deal for my airfare so here are a few pointers to keep in mind.
You should make your reservations at least a month before you leave as the airlines usually tend to increase the cost of their tickets as the departure date approaches. I know you probably heard of the “last minute deals”, but these are way overrated, they are not as common as you may think and you probably will not get a better deal than reserving a month before.
Be a bit flexible with your departure dates. I always reserve my own tickets and there may be huge differences when you move your departure or return dates by a few days. Use a service like Expedia or Priceline to compare prices. Also check the airline’s website because you will often find major differences.
Try to match your destination with the low season. When it comes to international travel; summer in North America is winter in South Africa, and vice versa, there are opportunities and you can get great deals that way. Also, it often pays a lot to use a local airline once you are in the country. Flights from Bangkok to Phuket for example are dirt cheap when you are in Thailand. Mango airline is a fraction of the price of South African Airways between Johannesburg and Cape Town for another example.
Of course, I’m only scratching the surface here, I find that the travel industry varies tremendously in their prices and I often sat with people who had paid twice what I did on our flight. But of course, once you find out how to take advantage of that somewhat puzzling system, and you get good at getting very cheap international flights, you will get incredible deals.
